Screentones added on my pc. Here's the untoned image, and the sketch with Yumi Kiiro's original art:
In the Inspiration section of my blog I wrote a post about Yumi Kiiro's Library Wars, and how I admire her style (http://wabisabimagpie.weebly.com/inspiration/yumi-kiiro-library-wars). I have recently attempted to start using ink and dip pens, and in order to practice this I have been working from manga pages to attempt to replicate the lines etc. used by manga artists. In my last post about working from other artists' works I mentioned that I sometimes change things as I develop my own style, but in this case I haven't been trying to change anything, instead working directly from the original images. My goal here is to develop skill rather than style.
The image above is my finished piece. I still really struggle with drawing long steady lines with the dip pens. Actually the hair in the bottom left and the whole of the bottom right picture I did using thin liner pens rather than the dip pen, as a bit of an experiment really.
I already admired the way Yumi Kiiro draws the hair in her manga, but I do even more now, because I found it really difficult, hence how messy mine is. I definitely need to practice some more!
I don't have any screentones, so I added the toning on my computer. Here's the untoned version, as well as the initial sketch, and the original page I worked from:
